Mahjong Basic Rules

Mahjong is a classic game for four players, the goal of which is to make a winning combination. To do this, you need to create four sets (triplets or sequences) and one pair. Here’s how the game works:

  • Start of the game: Each player receives 13 tiles, and the dealer receives 14.
  • Gameplay: Players take turns drawing and discarding tiles, trying to make the desired combination as quickly as possible.
  • Winning: The first player to collect four sets (triplets or sequences) and a pair calls “Mahjong” and wins the round. The game ends and the points are tallied.
  • Tie: If all the tiles have been drawn but no one has made a winning combination, the game ends in a tie.

Types of Tile Combinations

There are several types of combinations in Mahjong that can help you make a winning hand:

  • Pong (triplet): three identical tiles (e.g. three tiles with the number 2 from the bamboo suit).
  • Chow (sequence): three tiles of the same suit in order (e.g. 4, 5, 6 circles).
  • Kong (four of a kind): four identical tiles that give the player an extra turn.
  • Pair: two identical tiles (e.g. two tiles with the number 8).

End of the Game

When a player has made four sets (triplets or sequences) and a pair, he calls “Mahjong” and wins the round. The game ends and the points are tallied based on the difficulty of the combinations made. The winner is the one with the most valuable hand!
